I was asked to sub for the bassist in a Toby Keith Tribute Band and had to learn 28 tunes. There was only one rehearsal which was somewhat disappointing for me.
Yes, there some “low hanging fruit” in those tunes, but I wanted to be as close to “exact” as I could be so woodshedding was needed.
After two tunes the drummer looked over at me and grinned. After the set he came over to me and said I was “killing it” and he has never played with a bassist that locked-in with him like I did. (I must be doing something right!

The night went great and the crowd loved it. The Toby Keith guy said he could telli worked my butt off on the material and I was his go-to as a sub.
We played outdoors so I was able to use the Greenboy fEARless F112 and matching sub and Mesa 800D. It sounded so good with the Vintage (brand) Jazz Bass so I was in “heaven”. It ended much too soon.

. I played tons of retro and classic country vibes for many many years, and walked the walk so to speak--pbass w old flats, vintage looking and sounding everything in all the bands. Once I started gigging more modern vibes I got really into the great Nashville cats like Michael Rhodes (RIP), Mike Brignardello, Larry Paxton, etc. I love how melodic those guys could be while still completely being in the pocket and driving the bus. Such taste and nuance. Now I use mostly active five strings and roundwounds and am having a blast copping that big "modern" Nashville sound and vibe.
