My cousin Roy 'Futherman' Wooten is the drummer for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He uses sampled drums with his synth axe drummer. The coolest part about this is that the samples that he uses are samples of HIM playing drums. This isn't AI, but similar to the form of AI that I use.

Invalid Link Removed samples real singers, then lets you enter your own melody via MIDI or singing your own song and converting it to MID in the app. You can then:

  • write your own lyrics that can be sung
  • change the vocal performance (pitch, vibrato, breath sounds, timbre, breathiness, etc)
This is pretty awesome because real singers are being paid for their session work in creating the app, and I get to benefit from creating my own royalty free performance with the maximum amount of control.

The problem that I have with SUNO and others is that I cannot control the prosody when working with the music that I write and where I want to put stress and emphasis.

So, what does this have to do with Futureman? Everything! He is really excited that technology has caught up with him and he can now electronically play his drum stick hits with his fingers giving him greater polyphony. It's like he's moving from 2 hands to 8 with minimal effort. He can get the performance that he wants to hear. To me, this is the same. Instead of having to painstakingly work with a singer to get the performance that's in my head, I can direct them in the app.

Real musicians were paid, I can create royalty free, and get the performance I want. I can get behind this!
