I've been fortunate enough to acquire a couple of new basses over the past 6 months. One of them is the Sire P7, which is a P/J bass, with a Precision shaped body and Jazz type neck. I've always loved the P bass.. it's totally the bass for me. I picked this one up because I was curious about the all the hype around Sire and I was hoping that the P/J combo with the active pre-amp would help be add a more modern tone my existing arsenal of vintage sounding Pbasses.
As much as I can totally see the quality in this bass, I've been struggling to find that mojo.. you know.. really connect with the instrument. My vintage Pbass love has lead me to put flats on my other basses, but in an effort get a more modern tone with the P7 I tried some half-flats, seeking a best of both worlds kind of thing. Oh man.. I hated those strings.. they really felt like work to play. I took those off and put the stock strings back on (I think they are super slinkies or something to that effect.. a very light guage round wound). That was better, but still, no mojo. I then ordered a set of pressure wounds.. those lasted a day
I've now got a set of light guage chromes on there and I'm finally feeling it. So.. I guess I've learned that I'm a flats guy and I just have to accept that.
Now that I've got some strings on there I'm feeling, I'm going to need to spend more time with the pups and pre-amp. I'm finding that the tone is pretty generic. Not bad, but no unique character, if that makes sense. I'm thinking of maybe throwing in a Seymour Duncan SP-2 in the P spot and the SD Apollo stacked humbucker in the J spot. I bet that would add some real character to this bass.
Anyway.. sorry for the ramble.. it was just interesting last night, taking the P7 out for the first time with flats on it and finally feeling like I was really starting to connect with the bass. Mojo is such a weird thing, isn't it.
