finger tapping... finer points to increase speed?

Lower tension strings (lower gauges) will help. The traditional, common, so-called 'medium' string sets are excessively tight for tapping. Lower tension will be fine for all your other techniques, will help you stop using unnecessary amounts of force in your playing (something most players do because they get used to traditional sets), and be more healthy for the body.
I suggest something like .030-.090.
