fingerest?

how do u use the finger rest thats on the pickguard? Is it a decoration or does it have a purpose? I can barely use the thumbrest on my jazz yet alone one on the pickguard. The thumbrest on my jazz is placed to high and i have short fingers thats why i can barely use it.

If you're talking about the kind that sits below the G string, that's meant to be a rest for your fingers (or a place to grip your fingers against for an anchor) while you pluck with your thumb- an early idea that was created with the thought that more bassists would pluck primarily with their thumb. It's not used so often these days and is a decoration for most.

That was because at that time of design (late 1950s) - that was how most guitarists played (some Jazz guitarists still do this) - and Leo Fender expected that he would be selling his new products to guitarists who wanted to earn more money by "doubling" on bass!
