Firewire users...

Hello!

I am using a firepod as my main interface for recording with Gerage Band, and Logic... Problem! My computer is slowly but surely starting to kick the bucket.

Do any of you folks using new macs have a problem with the firewire conversion? Non of the new macs have the FW400 they have all gone to 800.

does the adapting chord work?

I use 2 different fw400 interfaces on 3 different Fw800 Macs all the time without a hiccup. The adapter I use is a fw400 to fw800 cable I got at mono price. ( have have 3 or 4 different cables all from MP just different lengths)

I've never had either interface ( Presonus Firebox and MOTU828 MKII) give either mac (2010 Macpro, 2011 Macbook Pro and 2011 iMac) any problems with daily use for quite a long time.

Thanks allot... i was worried last night as I think after I am done with this round of recording sessions I am going to have to move on to a new machine.

Now atleast I can rest assured that my old gear will still work on the new computer!

Using a 2011 MacBook Pro and a Presonus firestudio

No problem using a 2009 MacBook Pro with either an Apogee Duet, or a Mackie Onyx Blackbird.

I've used a 400 cable with a 400/800 adapter on the computer end as well as dedicated 400/800 cables. No problems in any scenario.

Firewire 800 is backward compatible with Firewire 400.
Firewire 800 uses a few extra wires to get the double speed.
It is smart enough to ignore those signals when a Firewire 400
device is connected.

suggest finding a 2007 -2008 Macbook pro with both FW 400 and 800 ports- they are two independent buses.

Thats what I am using right now... Trying to clean it all up, and remove all the stuff I haven't used in over a year on it to see if it will get running a bit smoother. But! now the screen is starting to show some signs of its very frequent use and travel over the past three and a half years. I do love the connectivitiy of it. If I could manage it I'd use it as a dedicated recording computer if I wind up getting a new machine.

The FW800-FW400 doesn't have any problem at all.
I use a Firebox and Firestudio connected in chain on a FW800 without problems, but I read of people have some issues with Lion. On Leopard they just works great!

Agreed, 400>800 is not a conversion, its just a 400 cable that can plug into an 800 socket, it losses the 800 speed of course but other than that, its no bother!

I go fw800 to ext drive then fw400 out of drive to interface.

That way drive is 800 speed, interface is 400 speed.

Manufacturers with an interface finicky for other reasons will say that one way of going from the 800 on your computer to the 400 on their unit is the right way (I went through heck with Avid and a buggy mBox 3 Pro and their support people insisting it is most optimally done a certain way). But as everyone here has said, as long as your cables are good the two FW protocols know how to respond when they see each other, and a high quality 800 to 400 adapter gives you perfectly good FW400 results.
