First Act guitars

Hey, i've not posted here in ages. Anyway...

While i was in Boston, i found this little music shop called 'first act'.

So i went in the place had this really relaxed atmosphere, guy just sittin on some beanbag thing chillin playin guitar, the sorta place you can spend hours.
I go to the shop guy, "hey, wheres the basses", he gos "right here man, feel free to play em". They had some freakin sweet ones, so i picked up this $2200 bass and started playin. Everything about this bass weight, design, tone/sound etc was nice, except the price.
The guy didn't bat an eyelid, i'm 16yrs old btw. my local shop gets all pissy when you pick up some £100 bass, or a friggin alarm goes off, ***?

so... they got a whole awesome range of their own basses and guitars, they also got a studio and they do custom stuff.

Oh yeh, then i found out from all these signed pics on the walls, that some awesome bands and musicians play their instruments and had even played at the shop, i think?.

So yeh, check em out, they got a site and their basses sweet. I would buy one of the less expensive ones, but shipping to UK would kinda be too much.

Anyone else heard of these or played them? whats your experience with them?

No, the same company, but now doing $1000 quality instruments.

Here in the states there is a company called First Act that until very recently was only known for entry level student grade instruments marketed through department stores, primarily Wal-mart.

However they have just branched out into higher grade instruments and the guitar player I work with just began endorsing the company. Don't know for sure if this is the same thing you'r referring to or not. The hollowbody Bruce is playing is called a "Delia" It is quite frankly IMHO a great sounding axe and not bad looking either.

If it helps, when you get a second, hit our website www.mightynostars.com and somewhere in there(they have just been redoing some stuff) there might be some additional info. The endorsement deal just went through so I don't think we pics of the guitar itself up yet. Maybe the link to the blog too.

Interesting company, heres where I see the flaw. They make total garbage and from what many people have said great instruments. There is no middle ground. The lowend stuff couldnt look less interesting. The highend stuff intriques me, especially the shapes, but Im not dropping $2 grand on a bass or guitar Ive never played. Fender moves people up through their instrument line. You may get a mexi when your learning, then move up to an american when you get a little older, then down the road you may buy a CS or something.

I realize there are companies, PRS, that have survived on a great name alone, im just really confused about thier marketing plan. I can tell you one thing, endorsements do not make me want to buy a bass or guitar.

The only ones I have seen have been cheapie Wal-Mart guitars. I am not going to google every post by someone. That's silly. The Wal-Mart guitars are still some of the worst you can buy.

In my opinion, the greatest sin of all is having the instruments to be prepackaged in a box to be shelfed on a rack. It became less of an instrument and more of a novelty/toy. An instrument either good or bad should be hung up on a wall to bathe in all its glories.

All in all, they made a wrong move to sell their instruments to Walmart, but smart enough to keep their products off the shelfs of the toy department. Otherwise, that would truly hurt their name, if it isn't already hurt.

Nice analogy! I have not ever seen one of the higher-end ones around here.. but there's a First Act G*itar that my roomate owns with two single coils that is actually quite a nice sounding instrument - I did have to do some work on it to get it playable, but it wasn't too expensive. Yes, it's a Wal-Mart one. He has an MIA Strat and he usually ends up playing the First Act because it's so much clearer sounding through his trashy rig :)

A friend of mine owns the Paul Westerberg model (a freebie - she works for a company that consults for First Act) - she says it's nice, but it took more than the normal purchase price in upgrades (new tuners and bridge) to get it to stay in tune. But she still covets one of their custom models.
