First Bass… does anyone remember going there?

It was in a farm pond, I was in an aluminum boat with my two Grandpas. I pulled up a 4 lb 8 oz. bass using a silver Bang-O-Lure. I believe my line was 10 Lb test. Fish fought me pretty hard, but I landed it. I think I was maybe 11 or something.
I know, no pic or it didn’t happen, but I would hav to dig in my attic and that’s just not happening…

Are you talking about Second Bass, at 2nd ave near Alameda? If so I remember that place from when I lived at Dakota and Clay st. First time I went there he had a koa Travis Bean for $450, and an early Fender AVRI Precision in Surf Green (!) for $700. That was ~ '96. In retrospect I should have snagged both. Not long afterwards he was gone.
A couple doors north on Broadway was the infamous "Lord Valve"....guru of the tube amp world. Walking into his shop was like a trip to the Twilight Zone....a bit weird and off-putting, tbh.
Any of that ring a bell? Or did you mean Guitar X, further south on Broadway?

I went to that Denver shop once while in town for a business conference. I was interested in a used Ken Smith bass in the store at the time. The instrument’s truss rod was so over-tightened that the 5th fret was acting as the nut. When I asked the owner about it, he just said that I could figure it out. I left.
My first bass was probably about a 9 incher, which we had to throw back. I probably cried about it at some point. Then again, I was probably 4 years old.
My first Bass Ale turned into 4 or 5 more. I felt like hell the next morning.

Yes. I bought my Rickenbacker 4002 (yes, "2," not "1" or "3") from there after calling them out of an ad in the back of a Guitar Player magazine (before Bass Player split off) in the early 90's when I was looking for one. Most of the places I called said either, "Huh?" or "No." I actually got the owner on the phone and he sold it to me out of his private collection for $1,500.00 after convincing him I was a true aficionado, with a 4001, 320, and 360-12. I later sold the 4001.
My first bass was a "Marina" brand P bass copy that I bought used for $100. I paid $50 first and took the bass home, then paid $25 the following two months. It was a lot of money for me back then..

My first was a Cort copy of a Steinberger. After pestering him for years to get me a bass, my dad drove me to a SEARS surplus shop an bought it for me for $90. This would have been 1985 or so.
1983 Ibáñez Musician. This was the first one I owned and I still have it. I had joined a band in 7th grade as a singer, but the bass player kept flaking. I used his red no name Precision knock off. And my sister's boyfriend played bass and was keeping an eye out for something nice but affordable for me.
He actually bought this right off and brought it over. Someone had removed the logo and the local shop didn't know what it was so he got it at a good price. He figured he could resell it at a small profit if I didn't like it but I loved it instantly and paid him back over the summer.

Guess you had to live in Denver to know what you're talking about. Great bass store with lots of high end basses. Too bad it's long gone.
Well, close: I caught a little white perch in the filthy pond down the street, it was fully of yellow perch which you can't eat, but I caught a white one. My mommy fried it for me and it was the best fish I ever had in my life.
When I was 13 years old, my band-director jazz-trumpeter father begrudgingly brought home a bass because then I talked about playing bass a LOT more than I did playing trumpet. He brought home a real Hofner violin Beatle bass, except it was strung right-handed (semantics alert!). He needed a bass player for the Jr High stage band and that was my start.
Except that like the brain-dead little dweeb that I was, the Hofner wasn't "cool" enough, so later on, we went to the music store and I traded the Beatle bass for a Ventura P bass copy that looked cool, but after two years, it was falling apart. By then I was working at that same music store, so I bought a real Fender Precision and discovered what playing a good bass was all about.
Oh, yeah, this was in the 1973-1975 time frame.
Except that like the brain-dead little dweeb that I was, the Hofner wasn't "cool" enough, so later on, we went to the music store and I traded the Beatle bass for a Ventura P bass copy that looked cool, but after two years, it was falling apart.
