Hello,

I'm a drummer who is looking to get into bass and was wondering about a decent bass to start. I am looking for a regular size full scale elec bass.

I can't afford a lot right now, maybe around $500 max. I am looking into a Fender Squire J or P bass, or possibly finding a used mexican made Fender J or P bass.

I am finding used MIM J or P's around $300-350 on Craig's list.

Is the overall quality a lot better on the MIM J or P, compared to the Squires ?

The quality between MIM vs Squier is very similar. Some are better than others, so it's usually best to try before you buy if possible.

I would have a look at the Squier Classic Vibe series. As for P vs. J, grab whichever you like better.

The days of cheap basses being bad basses are long over.

A few hundred bucks (new) will buy you an instrument that will carry you through your entire career.

I have a $260 Squire (with ZERO fret issues) that I would comfortably carry onto any stage on the planet.

I've a Squire I bought 10 years ago, new. That thing's neck is still one of the best I've ever played, compared to anything. Find a bass that feels good to you and you can't go wrong. Also, look at some Danelectros. :) Good luck.

What about the fender modern player series? They seem pretty cool, and they're cheap. You get these models:

Jaguar, PJ pups, jazz controls.

Jazz, humbuckers (in the form of two Js stuck together) in the usual pup positions, jazz controls.

Telecaster bass, basically, it's GORGEOUS!!! And cheap!

I love this series, it's like the pawn-shop series for bass!

can't vouch for the Squier VMs, but I've had very good experiences w/the MIMs, but definitely try before you buy.

+1 on saving for an amp. As a starter, for south of $200, and more likely closer to mid 100s you can snag Peavey combos like the TNT series all day long. You can use that as a practice and rehearsal amp even when you decide you need a bigger rig.
