First distortion pedal.. What to get?

I'm still relitively new to bass.. I got a set up.. A very decent one in my opinion..
But I'm looking for somthing heavier.... I need distortion or fuzz of some sort

I'm on a budget... Heck with it I WORK AT WALMART....need I explain more of why I can't afford much? Lol

I'm looking for somthing under $50. New or used (perferd used)

Music tast? Punk, blues, classic rock. I like the slayer bass sound on pshyocoathy Red.. That low end Grindy sound.. Lol

I play pick mostly. I'm switching between that an slap.

I'm open to buys from TB if possible. I looked thru the classifides but all the stuff I'm interested in is sold. The zoom multi effects pedal looked cool.. And sombody had one up for 45-50$ shipped.

Anyways any offers? Any site links?

Well i am really very new to bass too, in fact i might be the least experienced player on this forum, but from what i have heard and seen the green FUzz Big muff PI is the most basic fuzz pedal and the most used too... I think most proffessional bassists that play metal or rock have this on their gear. Also i think its quite cheap and very high quality
( then again i have only read reviews never used it) I think its $80 if you buy it new from musicians friens, so you should be able to get it on a very decent prize if you buy it used ;)

I hope this helps.

You are right that this is a desirable pedal. The Green Russian Big Muffs are quite expensive and way out of production. $2-300 depending on their condition. I wish I wouldn't have traded mine, I traded for too cheap of a pedal and the dude is selling it for a solid profit, and I just want to play it again :spit: Okay it's my fault for trading, dude is cool.

Anyways that just needed a clarification.

There are many different versions of the big muff. A black russian big muff could be had for $60 or so used, they are pretty decent fuzz pedals.

cant go wrong with a big muff find a black russian one on your local craigslist you can find one for 60$ used. Snagged this green russian for 225 with the original box...

I love my DOD Death Metal to pieces, specifically the pieces it blows things to. I got it with 9 other DOD pedals on old promotional demo boards, all the patch cables and stuff too, at a music store for $250, so I'm not sure what they go for but it can't be past your budget. Digitech makes one that's supposed to be the same or almost as good that'll probably still come under budget even new!

Well I accualy had a 1978 big muff v5. I accualy traded it for my genz Benz amplifire lol..
Very fair trade I might add... ATM I do have an electro harmonix queen triggered wah.. A extreamly rare wah pedal..with built in envalope filter from the 70s in great shape.. But the 9volt connectors Disconnected..and it hasn't been used in over a year... Was looking to sell or trade it for money to get a good pedal. But I haven't had any hits on Craigslist. And idk were to go to get it fixed.. :( it's an expensive pedal too.

But the big muff yea... I get paid about $400 a week.... Bills,gas,food... I can't splerg alot so that's why I'm limited.. At most maby $60 bucks

It's funny. U tell me to get a big muff... I traded the one I had to a bass amp so I could play bass... And now I need to get another one lol

Depending on your tastes, an Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff can be found used at that price, as well as it's mellower cousin, the Bass Blogger. You could also pick up, used, an Ibanez Phathed, a Boss Bass Overdrive, a DOD bass overdrive or a Digitech Bass Driver, which would all work and respect your budget.

At a $50 price and under, I would look at a used EH Big Bass Muff PI or a badder Monkey. I saw one sell for $40 last week. They generally go for more than that, that being said. Other inexpensive options, a Way Huge Pork Loin, Green Rhino or even Swollen Pickle. They don't come up at that price point everyday but with a bit of patience you should get there.

All that said for your tonal needs, I would say the EH is your best bet.

My first distortion pedal was the Boss Bass Overdrive. I got it 13 years a go and I still have it. Over time you'll find that it isn't the best thing out there, but it is great to start with and will continue to have uses. Simpole controls, with an effect blend, and a Low/Hi eq to play with.

You can find one easy for $50.

I'm going to actually suggest you go with more of an overdrive pedal based on your stated influences. Classic rock, blues, and punk don't scream fuzz (or distortion) to me as much as they do a nice overdrive.

Keep an eye on the classifieds here for a used Digitech Bad Monkey or even a HAO Rust Ride. I haven't personally used a Bad Monkey, but it should be close to your price range and get a decent amount of love around here.
