First Fender fretless?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by jenderfazz, Sep 12, 2004.

  1. When were fretless Fenders first offered? Jaco (and others) took the frets out, and the 70s brought fretless P Basses, but besides those cases I haven't seen vintage fretless Fenders. When were they first offered with fretless as an option?

I have an old Fender catalog copyright 1972 (CBS Musical Instruments) that has a fretless Precision.
    Don't know about anything earlier.

I believe that Fender first offered a production fretless in the early 70s and it was only the precision bass. I dont think they offered a fretless jazz until the 80s or maybe as late as the 90s.

  4. I think '72 was the first for Fender. Precision only. I also think the first jazz fretless was released in around '88 through their Japanese affiliate - a nice instrument at that, if memory serves me.

  5. Ahh, alright. Anyone else who can confirm this?
