first time recording this week

i have done some recordings before, but we are going in to do serious recordings. pro quality. is there anything that i should know. i dont want to go in there and get bullied into something. i know the bassists is usually the underdog.

i have an rbi so im planning on going sansamp di right into the board. should i mic also?

As someone who has spent many years as professional engineer, perhaps I can shed some light on the process, at least as far as you need be concerned.

I know you recieved advice DI and mic the amp, and certainly a good idea, however if the engineer doesn't ask you how you like to have it done, I wouldn't bother mentioning it. On that note, if he asks you how you like to record your bass, he is usually asking for microphone and DI choices, as well as mic placements that you prefer, not just that you want both.

You got a flat rate so I wouldn't worry about him trying to take advantage of you. Ask him to record at 88.2 and 24 bit. This will yield a much better sounding recording.

Other than that. Relax and have fun.

i was talking to him yesterday about it. and we are going to di and i think mess around with some mics. he said we will try some stuff out, he knows we arent quite up to par on the recording process and stuff

but we tracked drums yesterday and we are doing bass tommorow and starting guitar. drums went really smooth i hope tommorow does too.

If you've got a selection of basses take 'em along. I do my best to take a P, Jazz, and Stingray along to each session just incase.

Take extra strings, old and new.

Relax as much as possible during your turn at tracking. The more you feel at ease, the better you play.

Don't be too precious about 'your parts'. Have a good idea but be open to suggestions.

Take a notepad.....

On the DI/Mic subject, the last 3 sessions I have done have been straight to the desk without using a rig. That has allowed the engineer and producer to get a great sound really easily. In saying that, I was going straight into a vintage Neve desk....

yea for my band i more or less stick to the bottom end nothing exciting.

and im pretty calm about it. i just dont know if i should play with a pick or fingerstyle. il probly do fingerstyle cuase i can play cleaner, but i like the pick sound. il try both in the mix and see what i like.

il be sure to post up the songs after they get mastered!

yeah, bring every bass you own. And every effect/gizmo too. Experiment---or don't, if you like the sound right off the bat. And just listen, and think about "making a record" . . . .
Don't worry about an amp--you can re-amp later if need be.
Have fun, and think about overall vibe of the people and the room as much as the notes you're playing . . . .again, "make a record"!

well i just got back it went eh. there was some tricky stuff we needed to track a couple times. i went sansamp di and unaffected di into the board which worked out good.

and yea the vibe is really nice the guy we are working with is really personable and easy to work with. the songs are really shapeing up now i cant wait to tie everything together!
