Fix Fingerboard?

I got a typical craptastic (guitar) kit on ebay.

The fingerboard has some rougher patchesdown the middle that discolors it and creates unevenness

My best option i to just be really patient and sand it down, right?

Yes, but with a radius block, not a handful of sandpaper...

Yes. Make sure to go through the usual grits up to at least 300.
