Flamenco Bass

Check out anything with Carles Benavent on bass.

Chic Corea's 'The Ultimate Adventure' is a great showcase for Carles, and the DVD of that tour (can't remember the name of it) is AMAZING.

Carles was a member of Paco De Lucia's band for many years, and the 'Live in America' disc is also an amazing showcase for Carles in a truly 'legitimate' flamenco setting... smoking.

Also, the John McLaughlin 'Live at the Royal Festival Hall', while not truly Flamenco, features some amazing bass playing in that general style (I can't remember if it was Dominic on that disc... I think maybe Kai Eckhardt on the live disc, with Dominic playing some cuts on the follow-up studio disc... Que Allegria.. also very good)... they are both just SMOKING IMO.

The Chick Corea DVD is called "Chick Corea, the Ultimate Adventure, live in Barcelona" It's available on Amazon.com.
Fantastic DVD is you are at all into that sound.

Also I'm really surprised that Stanley Clarkes unbelieveable flamenco Upright bass playing has been mentioned.

Check out U-tube:
Thats about as amazing as it gets imho!

I just bought the Chick Corea DVD on Amazon. Can't wait to watch it.I love flamenco dancers. And a friend just sent me a copy of Belo Horizonte.Que Allegria I forgot I had.I have too many CDs not enough time to listen.I used to sit there for hours just listening to music. Now I just watch O'Reilly:) .

Thats some of the first upright playing that spoke to me, wow.

Great,
I've got the Chick Corea DVD because of this thread and I also like the Renaud Garcia Fons video.I'm not sure which cd of him to get.He seems to do quite a bit of bowing, which i don't like but when he plays regular style he is very impressive.

Renaud's bowing is absolutely awesome. His music is a great combination of middle eastern/spanish influences which I love. I've not heard the new album but the clips lead me to believe its fabulous. Otherwise I'd suggest 'Oriental Bass' as a good place to start.

Just ordered 'Oriental Bass' and also the new CD. They are a little pricey in the U.S., but worth it from what I heard from the clips and previews on Amazon.

Wonderful! Thanks again. I love this site!
