My vote is for "Funky Monks" #4 off of "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", especially the outro part. Of course, youa re going to get as many opinions as there are songs in their catalog.
THIS by a long shot, I know RHCP were originally a "funk rock" band, but I never really felt like it was that funky...they all tended to "overplay" everything to the point of stepping all over the grooves (IMO of course). I pulled up every song mentioned in this thread, and Bust a Move is really the only one that doesn't sound like a total ClusterF.
I'm sorry for making it sound like 'pre-commercial' was a slam on the chili peppers, it wasn't I just meant prior to really hitting commercial success (BSSM), all their albums were very punky/funky. And I'd have to agree with the fellow who said OHM is underrated. Imo, that album was a departure back to their earlier days of funk-filled creative silliness.
I played that at a high school talent show. THey liked it so much they gave me a week off of school!

I love apache rose peacock off BSSM. no slapping or anything, but very funky and melodic bass line in that song.
