Double Bass Flexocors

I have an Orig Flat Chrome D and G waiting for me at home. I may swap the BCs for those temporarily and throw the OF A on while I'm at it. And we're doing Pines of Rome later, so I might throw my hipshot and a Perm E on because I don't want to trim the silks on my Spiro Weich E/C.

Just did the swap. So we're now at OFC G and D, OF A, S42W E/C.

The open G is a little edgy to my ear, but in recordings it sounds nice. The OFC G and D have a depth that the BCs lack, but they take a bit more care to start. I want to spend some more time with them before I make up my mind.

The OF A is reasonably loud but a bit muddy. However, this might not be a fair comparison because I bought those OFs in 2007 or 2008 to put on my Arvi. I don't remember how long they were on there before being replaced, but they've been sitting in a drawer ever since. Also, I'm not sure the tension match as I go from D to A to E is very good; the A feels a touch stiffer.

I'll play them in for a few days, I guess, and see what happens.

I had a similar feeling about the OFC D and G. The OFC A sounded massive but the tension discrepancy between the A and the D and G was a bit much. I didn't leave them on long enough to hear them mellow out, either, which perhaps is my loss. Anyway, keep us posted with how the OFCs develop, @mjt0229.

As for myself, after having used Belcantos w/ a Weich extension string for some time, I felt I wanted to revisit Flexocor Deluxes, which while I had played on for quite some time, I’d never used them in a section (‘twas during the good old days of the pandemic when everything was quite shut down). I recently got to use them in the section, and they were great… I appreciated their power, instant response and clarity. But then I listened back to an old recording of myself when I had my mixed set of Flex92 D and G, Original Flex A and Permanent extension string, and I just couldn’t help throwing them back on. Probably has a lot to do with a recent sound post adjustment (which was also when I had my winter sound post put in), but man, these things sound and play real nice. Just as much responsiveness and power but with added depth and darkness.
