Flip top amps

I might be asking a dumb question or asking a question that has already been answered on another thread. If so please direct me there. But what exactly is a "flip top" amp? I'm looking into anger amps and live in a rural area where I don't get to see them much. What is the purpose/benefit/function of a "flip top" amp? Also I am researching this all on my phone which is probably not helpful and can't find it on there website or in a thread on TB. But I'm trying not to jump the gun on posting a thread with a beginner question.

The top unlatches and you can flip it over so the amp is hanging down inside the cab for storage/transport.

Until the last 20 years or so, the Ampeg Portaflex amps (as in the link above) were the most portable bass amplifiers you could get.
