He might have been and it just isn't panned apart in the stereo mix. It sounds Rick-o-sound-like to my ears, but with an emphasis on the bridge pickup.

Then again Geddy can make a P bass sound like this.

even if his rick sound in the later albums is amazeballs (hemispheres, namely) I think this sound here is my fav
