Flying bass !

I am planning on taking my acoustic bass guitar on holiday (by plane) with me. I am worried that the change in pressure might have an adverse affect on the structural integirty of the instrument, however it will be in a soft case and covered in bubble rap.

Are my suspicions correct?

The change of pressure isn't going to be a big deal - basses don't breathe oxygen! I'd be more worried about the baggage handlers and it being at the bottom of a baggage container in a softcase, even if it is covered in bubble wrap.

I personally would not travel with an acoustic without a hard case - preferably ATA rated.

Go buy a hard shell case to assure the safety of your bass.

I have flown with my guitar before. Absolutley DO NOT check it. Take it on as a carry on. I always put mine in the stewart's closet and once in the overhead. The stewarts are used to people traveling with guiitars and will allow you to put them in the closets. Unless you have it in a secure flight case, it will get damaged! The handlers are very rough and do not care.

Have a safe flight and take care of that bass!

I have another question: should I losen the strings before I take it flying?

I subsequently took the bass on the flight with me and everything was fine, no damage at all.
