I'm flying out of Orlando to WV for a country gig. I'm wondering if anyone has any comforting stories or tips about checking a bass as luggage. I got an old Peavey Foundation with the original case. Anyone think it would survive baggage handlers? I got it specifically because its a solid sturdy bass and it was cheap. I'm flying US Airways Express by the way.

It will probably be cool-US Airways Express are typically Embraer type 2+2 seat regional jets. You might actually fare better taking it in a gig bag and gate checking it-it will go on top of the pile when you get on the plane and you'll get it when you get there so it won't go through the baggage system at all that way. I've flown plenty of my Carvins that way with no mishap.
Not a bad idea. The last time I flew I had a travel guitar with me, on one flight it ended up in the flight attendant's closet. The longer you hold on to it the better off it will be.
On bigger aircraft I've never had a problem carrying on. There are two approaches, use a gig bag and refuse to put it below or use the smallest hard case you can and be prepared to gate check it as a last resort. Being very nice and smiley with the gate people and flight attendants helps a lot too. I even have pretty good luck with flight attendants letting me use the business class closets.
On the commuter class stuff, though, it'll be going in the hold in all likelyhood. I would never allow an instrument in a gig bag to go in the hold. So, bring your hard case, but definitely gate check it. The guys loading it on the plane will probably be gentle enough, but crazy things happen to luggage between the terminal and the plane (like getting run over).

I'm not sure but i'm going to say Bluefield because thats where Gretchen Wilson is playing and she is suppose to be Headlining this shindig. But again, I'm not positive. We fly into Charleston for what its worth. It's my first time going to West Virginia so I don't know much.
I don't know if this changes anything but its not a direct flight. We have a layover in NC. I'm a little more concerned about them losing my bass then damaging. I was jumping on the old injection molded peavey case today to see if it'd hold up and it seems sturdy.
I just got some info that we'll definitely be in Bluefield at Mitchell Stadium. Should be a good time. We're backing up a few impersonators.
On another note, I'm giving my bass to the singer to bring up since he is driving. That will save me some headache of bringing my bass on a plane.
