For those of you who have checked your EUB in a hard shell golf club case on an airplane, did you say anything when you checked it or just let them assume it's golf clubs? If they straight up ask you what's in it do you say golf clubs or an instrument? Asking because checking golf clubs is free, but based on size, checking a bass is around $200.

Double Bass Flying with EUB in hard shell golf case

FWIW, the Eminence EUB comes with a flight case that looks like a golf club case.
I bought mine used from TB, and it came with a soft bag that fits nicely in the case. I don’t golf enough and haven’t traveled on a flight with this bass, to know how this works. You can see that there’s a golf sticker; I don’t know if it’s original or not.
I guess it comes down to how you feel about lying and how much money you have.
There’s no ‘FRAGILE’ stickers on it, but that doesn’t seem to matter anyway.

When asked I have responded with "equipment", and this seems to work - I have not once gotten a followup "what kind of equipment?", but YMMV, obviously.
I’ve done it a couple of times (Eminence in an SKB golf club case). No one asked and I didn’t say anything and I wasn’t charged. I think they just assumed it was clubs when they saw the case. Guess it couldn’t help to put some golf-related stickers on there!
I flew with my NS NXT in a Sportube snowboard case, which had a few skiing resort stickers from the previous owner (along with a Gollihur BASS sticker and other additions of my own). I wasn't asked about the contents, nor did I volunteer any information.

I have flown with golf clubs, snowboards and baby strollers. At our airport, you get the bag tags and then you have to take them to the special luggage area and wait for a thumbs up from the person working there as you put them through an X-ray.
But at the X-ray, I get the feeling they probably don’t care much what’s in there as long as it’s not over the weight limit or looks suspicious. But I don’t know.

Interesting how things vary by airport. In Phoenix, I checked my snowboard case (with bass inside) at either the curb or the ticket counter (can't remember which) and didn't see it again until it came off the special oversized baggage carousel in Reno.
Update: didn't get charged extra for oversize baggage and bass arrived unharmed. Also, there was a TSA note inside the case saying that they inspected it.
Update Update: Back home safely, same deal out of JFK, no extra charge to check, bass arrived unharmed, but no TSA inspection this time. By the way, I flew Alaska Airlines. Thanks for all the input.
