FNG with questions...(what else)

Hello,
I am new here and haven't picked up a bass guitar since I was a kid and played in a band 1975-1979 mostly...for some reason lately at 46 years of age I want to thump the bass again...there are SO many more choices in bass guitars out there than when I played and even some of the "big" names from then don't mean the same today.
I always wanted a Fender Precision Bass but liked the Jazz Bass as well...
Can anyone steer me to a nice re-introduction guitar and amp? I am doing loads of research here and have gotten lots of opinions elsewhere from players to wannabes that I am confused...a buddy who still plays told me even a Fender Squire would be okay...
I am really not interested in buying a guitar and then buying another better one if I can "kill two birds" so to speak off the bat.
Same with amps...I won't be doing anything but thumping along with the music (if I can keep up)
I know...I don't ask too much, right but any help you care to share would REALLY be appreciated.
I live in Chicagoland...home of the Lakland guitar but a USA is more than I want to afford right now and even the Skylines are probably too much at this time but I will listen to any advice you can pass on.
Thanks,
Bill

Right, FN(but actually old like me:D)G. The good thing is that there's a ton of decent cheap stuff nowadays(Squier, Dean, Yamaha, etc); the bad thing is the wading through it all to figure out what will work best for you. Also, don't sell yourself short- there are lots of us old coots making time for bands, be they hobbyist, coffee-shoppers & full-on pros. TB is a great source of info; take your time & you should be able to slap together a nice rig(lots of stuff passing hands here as well).

thanks...I have been drooling over much on here and especially in the for sale area...I just don't know the difference in a USA Fender made elsewhere (I would have thought...well...in the USA) or a Japan Fender or a Mexico Fender and a standard, Deluxe, etc...I would think the standard would be plain and the deluxe and fancy standard but it seems the lines blur...
Thanks for the help...I am kind of diggin' the Precisions with the Jazz Bass necks too...

how much are you looking to spend ? how big of an amp do you want? Is there any possibility of wanting to join a band later on? If you are not looking to spend much you can still come up with a decent bass. The biggest advice i can give you is try before you buy.

check out yamaha, shecter, some squire vintage modified series basses

Used gear rules! Lots of deals out there right now. I've seen lots of great basses go for peanuts compared to a year or so ago (and a lot of basses hanging around at near giveaway prices). The Skyline Lakies are a fantastic value. I've had several and they were all gems. Don't have much more help than that I'm afraid... depending on your budget you can find some good deals out there...

another 40+ bass-thumper ;)

Crap, I was getting all set up to tell you to get a used Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn.

What did you get, in the end?

I did the same thing back when I was 45. I bought a used MIM P-Bass at GC, a brand new david eden 115xlt speaker cab, and a used GK 400RB off of an ebay auction. That seemed like a great starter set and I could keep up with the volume in a band.

Of course, I've gassed myself up into better equipment over time. But, if I hadn't been gigging, I would have been perfectly happy with my starter set.

Total $: 999.99 lol

Bass: 280

Amp: 252

Speaker 540

uh, that's really: $1072.oo

But you could buy a used speaker and save some money.

Carvin LB-70A 1996 Anniversary model...roadkill...you got my number...being from the Windy City area I was very interested in finding a Lakland and although I am not so hot on the red color...the Duck Dunn was really getting my attention...
Thanks,
Bill

I agree on the colour issue. I used to be all about black basses. My main axes were all black beasts.

Then I turned 30, and for the past several years, I've been all about seeing actual wood grain. If the Dunn was available in a natural finish, I'd have probably gotten one.

Sounds like you got a cool axe, though. Nice go.
