For the older guys

As for new stuff that gets played on the radio a good song is few and far between unfortunately.
I play with a few good local bands and i like a few new "alternative" stuff but most of it (radio play wise) is complete and udder trash.

I'm 57 and I guess I'm completely out of touch. Of all the cuts named in the posts above, I don't believe that I've heard a single one! In fact, from Heroincredible's post down, I've never even heard of the bands.

But I'm happy sitting here in my office listening to the 30th anniversary edition of Santana's album..."Santana". After a while I'll change it out for the Doors, or some surf music, probably Dick Dale.

I find it difficult to listen to most of today's music in hopes of hearing a cut I really like. Most of it's not bad, just doesn't do much for me. I play in a surf and classic rock band, so most of what I listen to looking for new stuff to play is music of the 60's.

Most people tend to favor music from their youth. I would be willing to bet that you will be listening to the music you are now when you are "older" as well. It's just the way paople are.

my band!! :) I think we have a unique sound, but i don't know how well it will play to the masses.

there are some good songs out there. but i think alot of what would be great will never get played to the masses. alot of what i hear on teh radio all sounds the same. plus i think they are more image than music.

alot of my favorite music spans from 70's through to the 90's. i like some of hte new stuff but it blends too much with everything else and doesn't really stand out. maybe i'm getting too old ;) ....never.... :bassist:

i highly suggest the following bands

the cribs - all of their cds, but if you want one song, try "I'm a realist"
The Strokes - the strokes have done for the new generation what the velvet underground did for the old, they made people want to play guitar. For cds i suggest, of course, all 3, and their singles as well! all excellent. For a few good songs, check out "juicebox" "12:51" "reptilia" "you only live once" "alone together" "barely legal" and a rarity and a cover "mercy mercy me"
BE YOUR OWN PET - female fronted punk explosion. for a song that totally destroys "bicycle bicycle, you are my bicycle"
The Kings of Leon - their last cd "because of the times", was an odd twist in alternative, but their older stuff is SOLID southern rock

I HIGHLY SUGGEST all of their first cd "youth and young manhood" for the older fellas.

god so many new bands that make some good old fashioned rock and roll

nonsense, I grew up on zeppelin sabbath the beatles alice in chains nirvana black flag husker du dinosaur jr the meat puppets circle jerks, and 10 billion others

I constantly search for new, because you can only derive so much from old

I bought Led Zep's House of the Holy and Physical Graffiti on the day they came out - at the time, that was the newest music available!

But although I might put the odd Led Zep track on for nostalgia - it is not the kind of music I listen to nowadays - which is mostly modern Jazz! :)

I'm not saying you'll never listen to anything new. I do. I'm just saying that there's always something about the old stuff.

^^^^ Horrible example, IMO....that song sounds exactly like it came off a Cars album (as in The Cars, with Ric Ocasek).

There have been some good stuff listed that is truly new and different....like Mastodon and 3" of Blood (although 3" is more of a new combination of older stuff).

I'm 30, so I feel kind of like I'm on a bridge between the young guys and the older guys. I watched MTV when it first aired, went to the first couple of Ozzfest tours, but I'm also out there playing with brand new metal bands every weekend. I'm constantly on Myspace looking for new stuff.

So what do I think? I think there's a lot of indie rock bands that are doing nothing but trying to relive the 70s and 80s. I think there are a lot of metal bands doing the same thing. But I also think that 1 in 150 bands is out there doing something purely different. Sometimes it works, sometimes only a few can stomach it. Here's a couple examples:

Between The Buried and Me
Psyopus
Horse The Band
The Human Abstract

As far as trends go, I'm glad nu metal is on it's last leg. I was REALLY glad to see swing go back to the grave. I was sad to see thrash go, but it's back now, and it's got a lot of young talent pushing it forward. Grunge was fun, but Cobain was no god, and I think the real heroes of grunge never got their full recognition.

I hope that came close to addressing the OP's questions.

I'm 58 and play a lot of '60s and '70s music, but mostly listen to more contemporary bands- I like Wilco, I think they're one of the most innovative bands in the country- John Mayer's excellent; Queens of the Stone Age- Bottom line is there's two kinds of music- Good music and bad music!

I'm 31, so I guess I qualify here. I try to listen to a lot of things, and like several newer bands. I actually subscribe to eMusic so I can find new stuff to listen to. Here's a list of some of the more recent bands I listen to:

  • Kings of Leon
  • My Morning Jacket
  • Clutch - been around a while, so I'm not sure they count
  • Spoon
  • Mastodon
  • Coheed and Cambria
  • Tapes N Tapes
  • The Sword
  • Wolfmother
I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them ATM.

I was just going to write the same thing. I'm always going through different phases. Right now I'm in a James Brown phase. I didn't listen to James Brown back in high school. Back then it was Metallica for me. I still like Metallica, but I'm into other things now.

I enjoy music. I don't care when it was made.

You might be surprised how much "today's problems and feelings" look like yesterday's problems and feelings. I know I used to think my generation (Gen X) was unique. We weren't. No more than the one before us or the one after us. Sure, there are a few differences, but many an album written in the 60's and 70's echo "today's" problems. The lingo is different and that's about it.

That'll change. It's almost a certainty. Life just gets more important at some point (a little after college for most). I used to be fully on top of damn near everything coming out that I felt was worth listening to. The newest everything. It was fairly easy; I didn't have anything else to do.

Then other things started to take up more and more time. And your tastes change and you start digging around for old albums that you disliked 10 years ago. That's pretty much how I quench the "new" music search.

Example: I really disliked Mudhoney (and quite a few other bands that were on that wave) when they were new(ish). Now? Really digging them. As I am a few other bands from the mid 1990's that folded after one or two albums (Lifter, Black Market Flowers, etc.). It happens.
