Forte D return bypass

I like my Forte D but I'm also just getting into using amp modeling with a GX-100. I was experimenting with a stand alone compression pedal plugged into the effects return expecting to bypass the eq and built-in compressor. To my surprise it sounded like the eq was still able to effect my tone when I adjusted it. I emailed Bergantino and they said that yes the return is in front of the eq. What's the point of a return if the eq still effects it?
So I'm on the hunt for a back up similar amp that has a true eq bypassed return loop. Any suggestions?

Just center the knobs. The Forte is legend for having clean transparent power. I do that using a Monique tube preamp. Thought I was bypassing the tone stack using the effect return , and noticed they still worked.
I have the older Forte without the drive knob , there’s a compressor instead.

Bergantino told me it was just for gain staging. Mine has a drive knob, so I guess the return by-passes the gain (drive) but still uses the eq and compressor. If I wanted to use a compressor pedal I guess I should turn the Bergi compression all the way down?

I have the D. Unless I'm missing something, the only tweakable aspects for tone are EQ and drive. There's no compression to adjust.
