I'm going to jump in the deep end of the pool here w/ a short opinion of my Fender:
Serial # says 1969, original neck said 1971.
I bought it not because it was a good price (it was) but because I owned a 1973 when I was in High school then. A lot of people have given me flack for putting a moses p neck on it, but the original neck paid for all the mods and original cost 3 times over. I am very satisfied about the outcome, the bass is bombproof and sounds unique, my sound. Sustain lasts until tomorrow.
badass II bridge
bartolini classic pickups
black fender anodized aluminum pickguard (since discontinued)
moses p neck
Recently I have been listening to the local 70's and earlier FM pop radio station while driving one of my jobs w/ meals on wheels here in Madison and comparing the sound of the early fender precisions, especially motown. The older sound was more woody imo, mine is modern but by no means sterile. Elton John's bass player sounds like he used a precision although I could be mistaken.
The one negative about the bass depends on your viewpoint, the neck dive, I look at it as a characteristic that seperates the hardcore (whatever that is marine!) from the average.
The sound has to be tailered w/ eq, the bartolinis can sound nasally so I dial in a lot of bass and subtract mids for a fuller effect. Again, it does what I want it to.
