Double Bass Freedom Suite

Because Sonny didn't play bass on it?

I'm surprised you haven't run across it before, it's one of his most legendary recordings up there with Saxophone Colossus, Way Out West, Night At The Village Vanguard, The Bridge and Sonny Meets Hawk.

Article discussing the context when it was released in 1958.
As a young self-taught bass player in the 60s, I listened to all the Sony Rollins and Gerry Mulligan albums that I could afford, starting with Way Out West and the Mulligan Live in Paris album with Red Mitchell. My mistaken logic at the time was that I didn't want a chord instrument to get in the way of the baseline. Haha ha.
