when arguing that german bow is better please don't use gary karr as an example. If all german bow players sounded like Gary Karr then I would play french.

Think of Petracchi, Quarrington, Bozo Paradzik (Czech baller, not a clown) or younger teachers such as Jeff Weisner and David Moore. And typically german is a more articulate bow and french can play longer. But german bow can do both of these better, obviously.

You realized you are talking about one of the most important and talented bassists of all times right? Those guys all learned things from Gary Karr, I bet almost all of us born after 1960 have learned something from him. And considering German bows generally have longer hair lengths I would say that a French bow can't really pull longer. They can both articulate well, its just easier for most people to articulate with the French bow.

I have a sneaking suspicion that people win jobs on both French and German bows. As long as the results are competitive, so will be the use.

some hunderts years ago cello players often used the gamba bow, that is very similiar to the german bow and held the same way. With cello, the gamba / german bow hold died out, because some very talented players that were emulated by others. used the violin bow hold. Experience shows that it is possible to play well with both kinds of bow holds. But if I would have to predict, which bow hold would die out faster (I think both are going to stay), I would predict that the frensh bow hold would survive. That would give one kind of bow hold for the whole string section.
