Fret leveling tool for bass

The Peavey has a Double-Acting Double-Rod (DADR) style truss rod. No, the "nut" is not removable. That's the head of the truss rod, permanently attached to the upper rod.

If the hex socket is partially stripped, be careful with it. Use a good wrench that's not itself partly rounded, and make sure it's inserted to full depth. If it gets completely stripped out, then you have to replace the whole truss rod. Serious surgery.

For leveling the frets, adjust the truss rod the same way as we discussed for your other neck. Tighten it to about 65% in the forward (normal, clockwise) direction, then level the frets at that point. For all the same reasons. If you do it right, the neck should remain stable, and you should rarely need to adjust the truss rod later.
Since there is no TR nut to replace, I decided in desperation to try the proper tool. A 4mm hex wrench fit the rod snugly and is not slipping. (Today I learned 5/32” does not equal 4mm...lol.)

With respect to setting the truss rod, is the procedure to tighten the rod clockwise until it stops (or the neck has significant back bow) and then back off until there’s only slight back bow? (I’m assuming a normal functioning TR at this point.)
[Edit: I got a new 4mm hex wrench which is 5mm longer and it fits deeper into the TR slot...TR working well. Neck has ski jump. I’ll level the frets with slight back bow.]

I leveled the Milestone frets using the Norton stone. I used a little oil to clean the gunk off the stone (with a toothbrush and rag) but generally it was dry when filing. The neck was in a slight back bow before it was filed. I’m going to reassemble without crowning since I don’t have a crowning file and I’ll see how it goes.

Yes, those frets should be crowned, to finish the job right. As they are, they'll probably work okay, but the intonation may be a little off on various notes. The purpose of crowning is to get that little flat stripe down to about 1/4 of the width of the fret, centered on the fret, and without touching the center of the stripe (which would ruin your leveling).

Have you seen my previous discussions about doing the crowning with a waterstone? Find a small Japanese waterstone, a medium to coarse one. Waterstones are much softer than oilstones. You can shape them easily with hardened steel. On the side edge of the waterstone, use an old small round file to make a small notch. Slide the notch, with the stone dry, along the fret to do the crowning.

It works great. I actually like it better than the commercial diamond crowning files. The diamond files tend to be kind of coarse. The waterstone leaves a smoother finish, not requiring any other sanding. From there, I go right to polishing with the Stew-Mac rubberized abrasive fret polishing wheels.

The waterstone will wear from crowning the frets, so you need to touch up the notch now and then with the small file.

Thank you for the info. I’ll review your prior threads and order the stone and round file. I’m starting to get the feel for using the Norton stone and I really noticed the improvement during the last few passes over the neck...I was much more focused on erasing the sharpie lines in a systematic manner and I was able to be more aggressive with the stone.

The bass is reassembled but needs a good setup. The D string has a flat clunky sound when fretted, different from the other strings. I’ll work on the setup, probably try different strings, and maybe re-level again before crowning. Thanks again for your help.

I’d like to get a stewmac crowning file but I’m not sure which one to get. There’s the Z file, and there’s a ‘dual grit diamond fret file’ which comes in 3 sizes (narrow, medium, wide).

I’m leaning toward choosing the medium size dual grit (150/300) diamond fret file. Is this the appropriate tool? Thank you.

The only Stew-Mac diamond crowning file I use is the 300 grit one. And even that one is too coarse for most use. I only use it for rough crowning a fret that's really flattened; then I go over it with the waterstone. The waterstone cuts about like 800 grit for comparison.

A 150 grit diamond crowning file will put deep scratches in the fret, ruining the leveled surface and adding a whole lot of extra labor sanding out the scratches. I don't know why they sell them.

A waterstone like this would work fine. Use the edges; make notches in both the 600 grit and 2000 grit edges. Great for crowning, and you can still use the flat surfaces for other sharpening (with water).

I have no experience fabricating tools but I’m going to give it a try. Is a 5/32” round file ok? I looked locally for 1/8” file but none found. Thx.

Sorry, I should have described it better. Make the notch about 2" long, on the long edge, starting at the corner. The notch shouldn't be very deep, only about half the height of the fret. You want the notch to ride on the fret in long strokes. The stone on either side of the notch shouldn't be dragging on the tape/fingerboard.
 
Yep, the second one is about how I made mine. You want to be able to hold the stone comfortably, sliding it along the fret. Keep watching the flat stripe along the top of the fret as it narrows down.
I may have cut the notch too deep...the fret tops are about 1mm. I’m going to file another groove a bit shallower but I’m wondering if the groove should be straight or curved? This is all dry filing, right? Also, if I used an 8” file and cut a consistent depth groove along the full 7” length of the stone, would that work?
I’m having trouble conceptualizing how the surface of the stone is cutting the fret. Is the fret being molded to the the shape of the groove (similar to a radiused sanding block), or is the entire 2” length of the groove cutting into the fret at various points b/c of the taper?

That's all it is. The curved notch in the stone is used to grind down the two points on either side. Make the flat stripe on top of the fret narrower, but don't completely erase it. Use your Sharpie on the flat stripe to watch your progress as you narrow it. Grind the stripe down to about 0.020" wide, about the width of the tang.

Sorry for my confusing question. I didn’t make clear that the 2” notch I made in my stone is not straight. Rather, it’s tapered toward the surface as illustrated in the attached photo. Now I understand the notch should be straight.

I saw the video and went with that. It worked Perfect!!! It wouldnt have been done any better if I took it in to a pro. Sometimes i you just have to break the rules.....lol

This has been an exciting thread. In my limited capacity, doing tech work on my own instruments, I feel that fret leveling can sometimes be set out in a more complex way than is totally necessary. There is a woolly overlap between theory and dogma, and perhaps this thread has smoked out a little of the latter in the fringes of some posts.

Having said that, there are only a few rules and you can't simply break them. You've either got lucky by applying the wrong principles and somehow just happened to get successful results, or you don't know what you've achieved and whether it is actually successful or not. You can probably get level frets by using a crowning file and dead reckoning, but it isn't the best use of the most optimal tool for the job.

I could route out a P bass for a J pickup by tracing the pickup onto the finish of the bass and then using a dremel and £5 chisel to hog out the wood. With enough skill, and luck, I could get okay-ish results. However I'm not using the best tools or the best workflow; I'm simply benefiting from the fact that you *could* do it this way.

The video posted early on, with that Duck Dynasty guy doing whatever he was doing, attacks the problem from the wrong angle in my opinion. He asserts 'too often a luthier will tell you the frets need dressed when it's only a single fret or even several frets'. I have no idea how this guy quantifies the phrase "too often", first of all. Secondly, why not dress all the frets while you're at it? He took some acoustic guitar (with over-generously rounded, sloped fret ends, which is the calling card of a hack luthier), and tidied up one fret. One shiny, properly crowned fret in a sea of dull, pitted and worn out frets. He acknowledges this, but I would rather just take a few hours to do an entire neck in one sitting, rather than do spot and patch repairs if and when I felt it was necessary.

Plus, his workflow is pretty hacky. He uses a crowning file to level one fret, and uses the two adjacent frets as his single reference point to ensure he has corrected the height of the problem fret. This method wouldn't be any use for dealing with a subtly twisted neck, and he's using a crowning file for the wrong job.

In short, I never just 'level' one or two frets in isolation. You might have a high fret or a low fret, but it is hard to fully assess this just by comparing that fret with its immediate neighbours. You need to know the whole story of the frets on your instrument. You might be correcting random, inconsistent factory fretwork. You might be fighting a subtle twist or hump in the neck. I've had necks with 'bowls' in the frets. A number of frets might be too low, simply on one side of the neck. When you start to level the frets you notice that you aren't hitting these problem frets with your leveling medium until you've shaved material off all the frets, and when you level these problem frets you have to keep going down to the center of the 'bowl' in these frets, with the fret in the middle of this problem area being the lowest.

On the other hand you might have that one annoying fret that is too high or too low. It might be popping out (I've had this on two Chinese 'Modern Player' Fender basses), or lower than the rest (the first fret on my '90s Korean-made Dearmond bass was consistently lower than the others). You still have to know the full story of the frets to assert that the problem is just that one naughty fret, in my opinion.

The acid test is to get your neck level, without strings, and to colour in the frets with a permanent marker. When you scrub the frets with your leveling medium you will see bare metal appear where the marker is being scrubbed away, and where the marker remains is your low fret, or section of low fret. Find a used bass with roundwound wear and you will be chasing your way to the bottom of three or four ditches ground into the first five frets by the action of the strings. Your frets have to be as level as the deepest point in this wear for you to get even, level frets.

A crowning file shouldn't ever be taking more material off the top of the fret, but simply restoring the correct profile to the fret itself. When I was a teenager I paid the local hack to 'level' the frets on my SG copy, and he did exactly that. He ran an oil stone up and down the frets until they were level, hit the frets with steel wool, re-strung the guitar and charged me £100. My SG had wide, flat-topped frets, and all the buzz and intonation grief that comes with that.

My Dearmond bass came in 'barn find' condition from a guy who stopped using it and stored it away. The frets looked like this:

Ignoring the fact that they are green (!!!), the tops of them are quite flat, and you can see a wee bit of roundwound chew under the D string on the fret to the left of the dot inlay, and on the next left fret again. These frets needed leveling, crowning and polishing:

Sorry, I forgot to answer you!

The notch can be straight or curved (in the side view), as long as the curve isn't tighter than the radius of the fingerboard. When you are crowning with it, only one small area (of the two points) is going to be contacting.

You work across the fret, watching the flat stripe, making it narrow and even in width. After leveling, the flat stripe often will not be an even width all the way across. Spots where the fret was high will be wider. The crowning process evens that out.

I've got a couple of fret jobs coming up in the next few days. I'll see if I can remember to take some close-up pictures so everyone is clear what we are doing here.
