It's more than a bass.... it's a DINGWALL!

I'm not a real educated slab guy, but I was loaned one of those basses when they first came out, for a little test run. Rest assured, I played the whole thing... that sucka played like buttah. Very nice, and the fanned frets didn't throw me as much as I thought they would.

Alas, I had to give it back... the luthier who loaned it to me called and said "Hey, can I get that bass back? Sting is here, and he wants to try it out". And thus the concept of the pecking order was reestablished....

Stupid Sting.

I do think one should be able to play the whole bass then have the taste to when to play the whole bass.

I would guess that Sting's vote probably goes for below the octave, not exactly a virtuoso.

I have noticed that a lot of you say we need to listen for the right intonation and not look. I have found that when I am playing I like to do the listen thing, but when I am singing while I am playing I find that I can't listen to the bass intonation and listen to my vocal intonation at the same time. I have to concentrate on listening to either one or the other. So......I look at my 2 little dots on the side of my fingerboard while I am singing amd playing at the same time.
