Fretboard Materials Sonic Impact

Okay, before I ask, this isn't intended to start any flame wars or bash anyones opinions, I just want to know.

What sonic impact does fretboard material really make on fretted instruments? Seeing as the string doesn't make real contact past the fret, wouldn't the FRET material make more of an impact than the fretBOARD?
