Fretless neck issues

hi everyone!

What I have is an ibanez sr370f fretless bolt on.

The symptoms are: I set the neck as straight as possible, set the string height and there is one spot around the 6th fret (for all the strings - more or less) and another one above the 20th where I get buzzing.

What are my options? I'm thinking of setting the neck straight without the strings and sanding it so that is really straight. Any other ideas?

Setting the neck without strings on will not be much help--at least according to every source I've seen.

That's about it, but the neck must be supported straight all along (at least at several points) its length while sanding, so it doesn't flex under sanding pressure- necks can change shape just being rotated from vertical to horizontal.

in other words, I need a neck jig - correct?

Yeah, but there are some threads on here with DYI type jigs, so you may be able to use a bench or I-beam, or screed to fabricate one for a one-time use.

Getting a fretless fingerboard really true is painstaking and exacting work. I do it often on electric basses, cellos, violas, violins and double basses. It can be quite a task to achieve an optimum geometry. A neck jig can be really helpful.

Leveling is definitely the best option and as far as the issue at the 20th you'd at the very least need to sand a little fall away. As far as the 6th though, a tiny amount of relief would probably get ya going at least.
