Bruce - is there any resource which explains your technique for artificial harmonics? If not I'd be very interested to hear an explanation from you.

Also, how hard have you found it working your thumb-plucking into "straight" fingerstyle? Is it for tonal variety or speed?

I'll try out your "thumb muting" ideas too if i remember.

John Patitucci always plays with his thumb on the lower pitch string (or the pickup). I think it's really difficult to play this way, mainly for muting reasons. I rest my thumb on the adjacent string for playing the E and A (i play a five string). For the D and G i put my thumb on the E and A respectively, since the picking fingers lay on the adjacent string and mute it, so i can control more strings at the same time. About the string point, i agree that experimenting is the best way to know what works for you. I play over the bridge pickup, just moving a little bit toward the neck. For a typical pickguard instrument (a Fender, for instance), the exact point is over the pickguard edge.
