Frustration with a praise band practice space...

I know you may be a little peeved at the notion that this pastor might not believe you or trust you but all in all it's much easier just to comply with what his stipulations are. I'm also in a Christian band and am blessed to have a studio to practice in, but in your case I think it's easier just to let the pastor talk to your pastors. Who knows, it may lead to a bond between the pastors and open up some doors for you guys.

OTOH, if one of you guys were playing the religious game, (talking the talk but not walking the walk), then there would be some room for worry but if all you guys are sincere then it should be no problem at all IMO.

I understand wanting to share your experiences with fellow bassists, but if you want someone to help you judge the way another Christian is treating you, is this really the forum?

I wish you success accomplishing your goals in your new praise band.

No - it's Gods house and/or the community's. He's the caretaker.

I play for a community theatre group with no religious affiliation, that rehearse in a catholic church hall. When an open improv workshop was without a venue for a few months a local church offered the use of the church itself (aweseme place to play). In both cases there was no question of religious belief, but a recognition that these groups were an asset to the community.

Isn't the point of Christianity to help first and ask questions later?

If you're ever mugged by the side of the road you better hope that pastor isn't driving past, because even if he does stop he isn't going to take you to hospital without written references.

Just go elsewhere. Rehearsing at that church is going to be more hassle in the long run.

He is going to let you and 8 other strangers practice for free. You should expect a few hoops to jump through. It does not sound like he is asking for to much, just erroring on the side of caution. Sit down and have a talk with the man. You are judging him without even hearing what he fully has to say. Sounds like you are a little POed you are not being give free passage to do what you want.

Take a breath and have your meeting. I'm sure that if you are going to do what you say you are going to do things go just fine.

Start the process see how it goes.

And to put his mind at ease, offer a security deposit on using the space-to handle the business end of the deal.

Let him research all he wants. You have nothing to hide,and it might open some doors like someone else said.

I'd have to say that he is just being careful and protective of the church facilities. So submit to his questions.. get it over with and be done with it.. You never know what his contacts may be and how they could come into play at a later date. Its either that or start looking for a rental. I'm sure it will be fine in the long run.

Coincidently, my band is entirely made up of former 'official' P/W band members who got tired of 'preaching to the choir'. We also wanted to appeal to whoever might want to hear a decent(hopefully not totally stetching it here ;))band. I still do a worship set here & there w/other bands. All that to say, I relate to your situation.
As usual, I for the most part skimmed, so correct me if I'm wrong. The prospective renter wants to interview/evaluate your faith/religious outlook(s)? Ask him if he's aware of the kind of folk Jesus hung out with(prostitutes, tax collectors & the like). The ones he broke loud on were the religious leaders of the day(Pharisees, etc). I can understand completely if he wants to interview you all to get a feel for whether or not it's a good risk. Him wanting to talk to your Pastors is a bit much. I suppose you'll have to take what you can get if you really want to do this, but that kind of potential judgement is why I haven't been in a certain church building in several years now.

Edit: I also agree, if effect, to the latter half of Jmac's post. His house, his rules. Personally, I'd look elsewhere- I don't think he's ready to learn anything from you. :)

Let's not take things out of context. Jesus loving 'sinners' is not a church letting anyone use it's facilities. Point of Christianity: John 3:16

From a secular standpoint, the pastor has every right to decide who uses building. If he wants to interview users and references, it's within his legal rights.
