I purchased this recently off of ebay, I seem to be going through a pointy bass phase (even though I don't play metal at all), Explorers being my favorite. This is an Arbor bass, made in the mid 80's. Though some Arbor stuff from earlier eras are pretty cheaply constructed, this particular line of instruments were pretty well constructed. I bought an ML (star?) shaped version of this new in 1985 (i think); it had a laminated through the body neck and was 32" scale. It was a great bass and I wish I had never sold it. Several years ago, I located another one like the one I bought new, it was in bad shape & needed to be rebuilt. I still have it & one day will get it finished.
I have been looking off & on for another one of these when I found this one. It was in pretty good shape, with a case, so I got it (for a decent price). When it arrived, I saw that it needed the electronics cleaned, some fretwork (loose frets, some fret wear, etc...) and a decent set up. I also found (to my disappointment) that it was a long scale (34"). No big deal really, except the reason I like the basses I already have so much is the shorter scale. I have owned a couple of the Epiphone Explorers and they are nice, but I really like the 32" scale on the other Arbor models that I owned. Plus, I have a really nicely beat up Hamer Explorer (with a Kahler!), so I don't need another one of these.
I have a lot more pics if you need them. I did a fret job on the bass, cleaned the electronics & set it up.
It's a nice playing bass, The P-bass pickup sounds decent (I'd slap a Dimarzio or a Seymour Duncan QP'r in there if I was going to keep it). The neck is straight, The t-rod works. The neck profile is fairly big: I like it, It's not huge, but I definitely wouldn't call it small.
You definitely don't see these everyday. I wouldn't call it mint, but it is in really good shape for a bass of it's age. I can't say the same for the case, it's decent, but the latches are not in the beat of shape. Plus you get the cool 80's case candy; a metal book & 3 coily cords!
