I agree with both camp's...Funk is a feel that you have to immerse yourself in it's intricacies, BUT, the tool is also inportant to get that "sound" across, like Marcus' Jazz-Funk Fender tone, to Louis' "Stomp" MMStingray tone, or Rocco's P-bass fingerstyle funk tone. You can play funk on a box with string's, but the "Sound" call's for the proper tool!

Funk is in the fingers, under the nails, the flabby part of your butt, the flabby part of your sisters butt, she needs to do situps! that fried chicken from Bojangels that got you sick, The grease from a fish sandwich at Lawrences fishery ( chicago thang ). I think it's important to have a bass with a P pickup to get that "classic" funk tone. I get a great classic funk tone with my Jackson 5er with Bartolini P/J's when the blend knob is all the way towards the P pickup (woods: poplar body, maple neck, bolt on).

Other than that, I think the term funk bass can't be completely covered, the only thing we can do most is to write down our opinions about the best basses in small categories (such as slaping, etc..), and that may help people choose their funk bass best suited to their playing.

...and even then there will be some subjectivity. Some like the Marcus J tone, some like the sizzly 'Ray tone, some like a modern dual-humbucker tone - all for slap. Some even dig the P-bass tone for slap (I don't). This is why people have 20 basses, I suppose.
