G&L ASAT bass clipping when slapping?

Hey all,

I just got a G&L semi-hollow ASAT bass on eBay. I love the way it feels and looks, but there is an issue with the sound. In passive mode, it sounds like the bass is clipping when slapped or plucked with intensity. I removed the battery from the bass, so it's only passive right now. I checked the gain on my amp, and also tried plugging it into an mbox, still sounds like it's clipping at any gain level.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

The ASAT electronics are the same as those of an L-2000. The tone controls are "cut-only", and running them at "wide-open" is usually not the way to go. I think you'll find that working with the settings will get you where you need to be. Start with everything on about 5(halfway) and work your way from there

Thank you! It's making sense now.
