Thanks for all the input so far!

Still crazy, after all these years, yet both sensitive and tactful, respecting both the OP, as well as others opinions...

... I like it... and then there's the possibility Malak has one, or both, basses for sale in the classifieds...

:D:roflmao::D:roflmao::D!

Somehow Malak was the only one who PM'd me who WASN'T trying to sell me one of his.

I voted other. I don't like matching headstocks and think G and L look like 80s basses. I suggest you get the american professional in sonic grey.

I tried one out at GC and liked the feel, but the pickups sounded pretty dull to me. Of course this could be old strings/bad setup, so I'll see if I can find another for a bigger sample size.

I feel like the 60s spacing doesn't jive with the nonvintage tone requirement, no?

Not non-vintage tone per se, just not thinner lower output pickups. But then again maybe I have a misapprehension about old pickups.

image.jpeg Can't speak for the AC, but my JB is a tone, sustain, and overall great feeling beast, so you know where my vote went. Sorry for the blurry shot

See, Spidey? :p

As yummy as the Clayton-sig looks, I've got an awesome, green bass already. (Shameless Plug: Look for it's "Unveiling" thread later this week! :smug:) I just wanted to pass on some links, but in a way that would keep the more predatory/ruthless shoppers from grabbing them out from under him. But to be fair, I will cop to having sent PM's containing my own sale threads in the past.

All in jest... strictly here for the entertainment... and that book, over there... possibly the weather vane, too.

USA G&L's have quartersawn necks, which are great. Great quality.

Yes, quartersawn necks are awesome, but they're not standard on G&L USA basses. It's now an option that carries an upcharge. At times, G&L USA basses used to just show up with quartersawn necks. My understanding was that they'd use quartersawn wood if they got a good deal on it, so sometimes you got lucky, as I did with my 2010 JB.

Speaking of which, normally I'd recommend the G&L because they are outstanding, and IMO typically better than comparable Fenders. But the Adam Clayton is really nice, so I'd call it even, unless the G&L has some spec you'd prefer, like a quartersawn neck or different fretboard radius. (Until mid-2015, the JB came standard with 12" radius, but since then it's been 9.5" like American Standard Fenders.)

BTW, I think the G&L's pickups provide classic, old-school J-bass tone. They are not high output like G&L's monstrous MFD pickups (L-series, SB-2, M-series), but traditional J-bass alnico single coils.

I love my Adam Clayton. Feels great and a great player. I did not like the sound compared to my US Geddy. I changed out the pickups to a set of Aguliar's and it is much better. That being said my Geddy Lee is my go to bass. For me it just feels better and plays better than anything I have ever played.
