G&L L-2000 vs. G&L M-2000

Never mind, J. I did a search on "Sterling Stingray", and read some comparison threads.

Wow. Ceramic pickups + series wiring, in addition to a fast, slim neck, and a body style that I happen to prefer. And it's reputed to sound even snarlier & more aggressive than the Ray.

That I did not know...

See how you like playing it, and compared with a SR or PBass - while I much prefer the Sterling body size and look, I found it lacked enough of an anchor point for my forearm to get purchase for the way I play. I do need to try one out again though, that was years ago.

I recently acquired an M 2500 in a trade. I was surprised at how much I like the bass. I have owned an L 2500 and loved it although the unconventional electronics take time to understand. I also had an MJ5 pass through my collection and thought it sounded too polite. I expected the M 2500 to sound similar to the MJ5 but it is a lot more like the L 2500. They did a great job on the electronics and it is very easy to get the tone you want out of the M 2500.

All that said, if you want a really rude, in your face bass tone, I think the L 2000 will be the one to give you that.

micheal. don't rule out the EBMM Sterling 5. it's the most underrated EBMM bass out there.

Sorry for old bounce back! yes on this, I am trying to decide between the 2, I like a more simple of no switches and a little narrower neck of Sterling

M question...are the pickups wired series or parallel? Who cares about cut only....in reality it is just a reference point no? Anyway, I would like to try one of those Ms one day but I wonder how close it would be to my Lakland w/bart humbuckers since the preamp and controls are essentailly exactly the same. Good luck!

I recall reading that the M-2#00 pickup pan control is wired such that in the center detent position the pickups are in parallel and when the pan control moves in either direction off center the wiring changes to series. I have no schematic to support this however I do own both L-2500 and M-2500 Tribute models. When rolling the pan just off center toward the neck pickup (a position I use often) there is a volume boost plus deeper tone. The volume and tone change is similar to changing the series/parallel switch on my L-2500.

I'm starting to come to that conclusion myself...

I've already read a couple other G&L threads here on TalkBass, plus a few L-2x00 reviews @ BGRA (all the reviews there are old, so there's nothing yet on the M-2x00 series).

If I were looking for a more modern, refined, smoother take on the G&L sound, I do believe the M-2000 would be the one. But I'm not. I want a bass that's downright rude. I want one with a nasty attitude. I want one that kicks ass!

Save your money and buy the tribute version. Same pickups.
