In My opinon G&L still needs to get the message. While they did produce a 5er that actually worked long before Fender got around to it, they are still WAY too conservative.
Hey, I've got a fretted and fretless USA L2500 (both blueburst...too cool) plus an au naturel Tribby L2500. They are my main 5er axes. Just do it all from bar bass (tribby) to any tone you wish (other pair). But I think G&L needs to not only discover that ALL these basses need the K-mod (and I install the OMG mode on a push-pull on the treble knob) but (and here is my rabble rouser) they need to start not only making everything in 5, but also start seriously thinking about making L2600 basses!
Sure 4s are very trad but 5 and 6 is gaining all the time. So why should I be reduced to playing my three SX 6 ers when what I really want is... Yeah I know designing a 6 string bass is a big manufacturing pain. You have to develop a new neck, new body neck pocket, new bridge, new pickups etc. You have to prototype and tweak the whole thing into max so you don't sell a dog and ruin the rep of your other lines. And then after all the work, 4 strings sell like hotcakes and 6ers move slow. But hey, tell them Ed, the hand writing is on the wall. An M2500 was a good first step into the modern world but Leo's last bass ain't gonna be done until those 6 string L2600s are coming out of G&L.
OK, sales pitch for new G&L business plan is over.
it's the pickups and electronics. the M-2500 has slightly underwound pickups and a 3-band 18-volt preamp (active only). while the L-2500 has hotter pickups, active/passive electronics, series/parallel switch, pickup switch, passive bass & treble cut controls.
like i've already stated in other threads, they need to bring back the 4+1 headstock for the 5'ers. and, if they did go the 6-string route, a 3+3 headstock like the current 5'ers would work.
L2X00: G&L's original Tri-tone circuit with Leo's MFD pickups, passive B/T controls, 3-way pickup selector, and series/parallel switching.
M2X00: Active B/M/T preamp with pickup blend and MFD pickups tweaked to enhance their series operation. No coil-switching options, no passive option.
The range of tones in the M basses is more modern - sparkly highs, sub-bass lows, vs. woolly highs and strong low-mids.

G&L needs to bring back the L-1000. All the meaty goodness of the L-2000 with no batteries!
They brought it back for a limited run a couple of years ago. They have all the specs and could easily start producing them. The only thing is they didn't have the reissues with the front load (so no metal plate). I really like the look of the metal plate and wish they would include them.
i agree with this as well. they should do a retro series with nitro finishes and front-loaded electronics with the old metal plates.

+1 Regarding the interest in expanding their models to include 5-string versions. I have recently been thinking about how I would JUMP if G&L were to make a JB-2 in a five string. Thank you for bringing this up and I look forward to hearing your reviews again.
There are so many choices for people hunting for P & J-inspired instruments, but G&L is doing great things at a much lower price.

I play and own at least a dozen basses, but my G & L is my primary bass. I'm not sure what the purpose of the pre-amp is in my 93 ASAT, but it sure cuts through drums and guitars.
And for me, always been a fan of the tele body style.

I too have fallen in love with G&L basses. I have a L2500 tribby that is so awesome! I use to play with 5 pedals and I have learned that I can get almost any sound I want out of the bass without effects. It is the best all round bass out there!!!
The L & M are best friends! Different enough to own both.

You are correct- newer G&L's have a three way pre-amp switch- plain old passive, active boost, and active boost with extra treble. Older ones, usually just passive/active boost.
The tone controls are cut only and are actually passive, so they work in any pre-amp mode.
There's a whole host of other options with the middle switch, but standard is parallel/series. Some old ones have single coil instead and you can get the K-option on new ones as mentioned earlier in this thread. This ads single coil so it's a three way.
The El Toro middle switch is the weird one. OMG mode on it is even more in your face, which I didn't think was possible!!!
