G&L Tribute M2000 (please enlighten me)

Just got a G&L bass. The neck, the preamp, the color - the whole thing is very very good, but I am not sure I am crazy about the pickups. The bass has a “darker” tone than my other basses, somehow a bit more “muffled sounding”. Is that how it’s supposed to sound? This is my first G&L bass, I usually play Fender, Ibanez, Yamaha and Sandberg.
Everything else you can tell me about the M2000 is very much appreciated, your take on this bass, experiences etc. etc.

How old and crusty are the strings? Check pickup height?
An M2000 should be clean and clear.

G&L pickups are very hot and they need cutting.
I have L2500 and it has bass/treble cut only pots and it sounds muddy until I use them.
On other basses I never cut anything, but G&L's are that kind of animal ;-)

I wouldn’t call my Tribute M-2500 “dark,” but it’s not as bright as single coil basses, IMO. I do think G&Ls (M and L) sound thicker than single coils and pretty much any Ibanez I’ve played, though.

No experience with Yamaha or Sandberg, so can’t comment to those.

I’ve played G&Ls for a long time, so Js and Ibbys tend to sound thin to me. So it could be an EQ thing, but I’d start with fresh strings, fresh batteries and working with the pickup heights. The M should be less “wolfy” than the L series and should be pretty easy to dial in.
