Gallien- Krueger 700RB

Hey all, There is a Gallien- Krueger 700RB for sale near me for $200, now the only problem the seller says is the ground lift not working properly..Has anyone had to deal with this or know what it would take to fix it and maybe how much it would cost...Thanks

Never assume that what's claimed as the problem is actually what's wrong. Undiagnosed claims are very common.

Cost could be anywhere from $75 to "a lot more" depending on what's really wrong with it… or zero if they misunderstood how it's supposed to work.

Just beware that he may not know and is making assumptions.

I see used Genz Benz amps in my shop all the time with horribly misdiagnosed issues... assumptions by those who have no idea what they are talking about.

Sometimes the actual problem is much less serious than predicted/assumed, but sometimes they are much more serious and expensive. Taking somebody's word for something without an actual (and correct) diagnosis is always risky.

I agree 100 %, This is what he said when he responded to me "When pressed it gives off a high pitched noise a bit. So it needs to be fixed the ground lift button"

Now, not that you should just go and blindly act on what I'm about to say, but that actually sounds to me like it's likely working as intended and our friend just assumes the switch is the problem - vs it being the trigger that uncovers another problem unrelated to the amp.

There's a reason why ground lifts exist, and either setting could either increase or decrease noise depending on the scenario.

OK Here's the response I got from him I asked "so it makes a noise when using the XLR direct out but not from amp to speaker cabinet ? " and his response was "Correct" I know I would have to go see for myself to see exactly whats going on with the the amp, I'm hoping it's something very simple to fix or really not a problem at all and if that's the Case the $200 I think is a deal..and again has anyone ever have to deal with an issue like this ?

I deal with issues like this every day, that's why I responded the way I did.

It may not be a problem but just a symptom of something else external to the amp. It may also be a real problem. No way to know without a proper diagnosis, actually testing the amp on a proper test bench.

If it only does this with something connected to the DI output, but not when there's nothing connected, there MY be nothing wrong. If it does this with nothing connected, there is definitely something wrong.

With which part, the ground lift being turned off and on with one selection leading to more noise than the other? Again, that's literally what it's for.

That response doesn't say anything about the DI being connected to a mixer or not. That's critical information.

He said it only makes the noise with the DI out to mixer and doesn't make the noise when pressed in or out just plugged into a cab

If this is really correct, there's probably nothing wrong with it.

Thats a good price for a great amp with a long service life. If that really is the problem, just use a direct box. That what most front of house engineers want anyway. Imho
But Agedhorse is the best for anything amp related. And this is a fact.
