In the context of a double bass, it probably refers to a double base with "gamba" corners as opposed to violin shaped corners. This comes from the viola da gamba (loose translation: violin of the leg) family of instruments.

I believe all viola da gambas have flat backs, however gamba double basses can have a flat back or a swelled back.

I'm sure there are a few folks out here who can provide a more complete answer.

There are MANY variations on both themes, these are just some examples I inked on the quick.

I tried to dump one, but no luck.
By the way, thanks to TBDBer Jonas Lohse in Frankfurt...www.doublebassguide.com for the Busetto pics.

The funny thing is, when you click on the picture you only see one of them.
