The Rotosound Swing Bass 66s made their debut in 1966. They didn't start regularly showing up in music stores until '69-70 and gradually started getting more popular over time. It was pretty much Entwistle and Squire who put them on the map and popularized them in the US. And they really took off once the original progrock world adopted a Ric and roundwounds as that genre's signature bass sound. So figure around '72-74 before they really started getting popular here.

If I can remember this right, the story behind this one (from Carol Kaye) is that the drummer on the session was playing too far behind and kind of dopey. The producer asked her to play something really forward and 'up' to pep up the drummer, and that's what she did.

She didn't think they'd keep the take on the track, let alone that it would become a minor hit, as she thought the line was too busy...

CAROL KAYE actually wanted to wake up the drummer....think this would technically be a "boogaloo" bass line...I'm not a musician but this riff is ASTOUNDING,OUTRAGEOUS....and when I asked her about it,she said,"Well,you do what you have to do to keep up with a big band!" Here Carol is playing a "balls out" (LOL!!) riff....I don't think anyone has EVER done this before or since.
