Gate Checking Mono Vertigo Case

I two cases a Mono Vertigo case and a basic guitar center hard shell Road Runner case. The hard case is heavy traveling and when I get to my destination it's sort of a pain to take on the train. It gets heavy at 10lbs without the bass. The Mono case is easy with backpack straps. I ideally want to travel and have the Mono case at my destination. I have only traveled with the hardshell case and had no problems gate checking it. Is it too risky for damages if I take my bass in the Mono case and try to put it in the overhead bin and gate check if it does not fit?
