GB800 problems:/

Just received my brand new Gallien Krueger RB800 today and it doesn’t work! Amp powers on, nice little thud in the cabinet to let you know its ready to go,plugged the bass in and nothing. Plugged in 3 different basses and 2 different 8ohm , cabs i even went DI into my mixer and nothing. Finally plugged into the effects return and got sound. I guess theirs a problem with the input or preamp. Everything else lights up and i know its connected right, just got a bad one i guess. not sure if im going to get another one or get something else. Anyone else have similar problems?

Was it brand new out of the box?

Try cleaning the effects return jack.

Yep brand spanking new out of the box. Talked to the store he says this is not uncommon from gk, i always thought you couldn’t go wrong with the rb800. i still don’t know if im going to get refund or get another. its hard to get a good amp for the price and vie had an rb400 long time ago and it was fine not sure what happened here tho.

Did you try cleaning both the input and effects return jacks with contact cleaner? It would at least be worth a shot. Also, this is the first time I've ever heard of an 800rb being dead out of the box, it certainly is not a common GK thing.

No. the only way i can get sound out of it is to plug it into the return side of the effects loop . That just lets me know that the problem is within the input, preamp or something on the front end of the amp, the effects loop works and that is the last thing that comes out of the amp. when i first got it i could hear a little something rolling around on the inside but im not sure if thats the problem or not. i think if they have another new in stock then ill get them to send it to me, others wise im not going to have a brand new amp that has never been used shipped to gk to have fixed, thats just bad mojo. i still want this amp and i hope they have another one in stock as i have gigs this weekend that i would like to use it on.

If a component in the preamp came loose then it must have happened during shipping, all GK heads are put on full throttle and monitored for 2 hours before leaving the factory, point being the 800rb wouldn't have shipped out of the factory if it had the problem back then that it does now. Looks like it might have suffered the wrath of an angry UPS man. Good luck, I would not give up on the 800rb, get another one if you can.

The thump and sound if you plug into the effects return means the power section if fine.
Chances are, the pre section is, too.
I vote for t loose connection between the pre board and the power board.
If it's new and under warenty, get G-K to check it out.
If not, unscrew the top cover, find the wires coming from the pre board on the front, to the power board on the baack.
There are a couple of sets of wires, with blade type connectors.
Shoot some conntact cleaner on the blades, work the connectors up and down on them, then gently squezze the connectors a little tighter and put 'em back on.

That worked for my 400RB.

thanks for everyones input . im going to get them to send me another one considering just bought this yesterday and it got her today and have only had it for a few hours. the store i bought it from has a 5 day return policy. i don’t want to ship an amp i just bought and have only had for a few hours to gk to have fixed. i paid a decent amount of money for this amp and i want it to work out of the box. i will ask the store to make sure it works before they send it as this could have happened while it was shipped to their store.
