Anyone know if Geddy used any effects on the Counterparts CD? Seems like a little bit of Chorus on some of the songs. I like his jazz bass sound on that CD moreso than any of the subsequent CDs. Also anyone know what guage strings he used?

Indeed, if there are any effects there, they've been added in later. Me, I still find that record hard to listen to, especially when you consider the glories that came in the 4 records before it! 
Not sure but he may still have been using Wal basses at the time of recording Counterparts...
I think its interesting that- since Geddy generally hasnt colored his tone w/ effects- he has used basses that are distinctly different sounding (Rickenbacker, Wal, Fender). Now that he has settled on the least distinctive sounding of the three (imo), he sounds better than ever

I think Counterparts was the first one he recorded with the J after the Wal period. I am not completely sure about Roll The Bones.
But I agree - great bass tone. And Counterparts was the last album that, IMO, didn't suffer from overcompression in the recordring (until Snakes & Arrows, in which case they were consciously avoiding it after the terrible press Vapor Trails got).
I don't hear any "effects" on that album, though, except maybe a little overdrive.
Old thread… anyway, just listened to a podcast with Kevin Shirley today when it was discussed this was the first LP he worked on with Rush. He said Geddy had "this bass that sounded more like a piano that a bass", I think he described it as thin, and he was using a GK. So apparently Kevin found a busted up B15 with a torn speaker cone in a closet and pulled that out and convinced Geddy it would sound fantastic in the mix. The conversation expanded to explain similar confrontations he had with Alex about how he thought they were doing the wrong thing. "Counterparts" was the result.
