Isn't $3500 on the low side for a carved bass? I mean, sure, folk talk of "finding" wonderful treasures. But from a shop?
I'd tend to suspect a $3500 carved bass would be well short of what I would consider "semi-pro." I'd bet it is heavy and overbuilt, with the sound suffering as a result.
At the very least, I would suggest comparing it to more expensive basses - hybrid and carved, just to see how it compares.
$3500 is a lot of money. But not all that much in terms of upright bass.
From what I hear, there are A LOT of basses in the tarheel state! I know one person I'd ask...
