Double Bass German Grip on French Bow

Hey all,

Curious, are there any players that hold a french bow with a german sort of underhand grip? Is this an accepted technique, and can it be effective? I have been holding my bow this way and it seems easier for the beginner, or at least for me. I want to get an actual german bow at some point soon, but wanted to see if there was any validity to the way i am holding the french bow currently.

No, that sounds like a tendonitis festival. Of course you can mess around with a German hold on a French frog, but it won't be as comfortable as it should be and the cambering of the stick is substantially different.

Yeah..i noticed the near impossible access to the E string as well. Strangely i don't feel much tension playing this way, but the E string access is enough to stay away from this technique. I need to get a german bow.

I agree. Even the cheapest German bow would be more comfortable than what you are trying
