Getting better bass tones through computer

I'm mostly a guitar player so I don't own a bass amp. So far I've been using my bass like this:

Bass -> Soundcard (SB X-Fi Xtrememusic) line/mic-in via 1/4"->1/8" adapter. As a software I've used the Guitar Rig 2 demo and it's bass presets and amp modeling.

Now, I find that the tone could be better, especially in the clarity department. Is this due to not providing the proper impedance to the soundcard? Would something like the Line6 Toneport help for this?
