Hey guys. Lately I've really been playing my P-basses over my StingRays. I love the tone but they lack the Punchiness that my Rays have.

As of right now I play right into a GK 1001 RB-II/GK neo 212 half stack. No effects or anything.

So my question is: What kind of effects will give my passive P's the punchyness of my active StingRays? Also I reallly dont want to get into having tons of pedals so is there any rackmountable effects I can look into? Thanks in advance!

I play a passive P with flats and get plenty of punch. However, I have never played a StringRay so I can't compare

However, a compressor might help. I have a Fishman Pro preamp and when I used the compressor at home I hated it. But I tried it at a jam and it punched up the sound in a good way.

There are lots of good threads about compressors.

Yep, some compression would help I think. Apply a moderate compression ratio, turn up the gain a bit, and you should feel more punch. The only downside is that you may experience more noise depending on the equipment before the compressor.

Compression is definitely a suggestion, but if your P-basses are lacking punch... why not consider replacing the pickups instead?

I have a Schecter bass that I installed an EMG active P pickup into, and it's VERY punchy. I haven't had a chance yet to really compare the punchiness to that of my Stingray (I just got an SR4 a few days ago), but I'll let you know.

What kind of P bass are you using? Higher-end Fenders usually come stock with some pretty thumpy passive P pickups.

This might be fairly obvious, and you may have already done it, but have you gone back to your amp and set up the EQ for the P-Bass? With that bass through your rig, you should have all the punch you would ever need. If you have already done that, a compressor or a SansAmp BDDI should work. Good luck.

Nothing sits in the mix like a Precision. Although, Stingrays are great as well. I would suggest that you keep the Bass, Hi-Mid, and Treble flat, but boost the low mid to about 1:00-2:00. I never had a problem cutting through with my 700RB. As long as you don't cut the mids you shouldn't have a problem. Also, keeping the boost at 12:00, and not putting the contour up will help out huge(if you don't already have them set up like this). Good luck!
